Shawn Backer

Shawn Backer serves as an Instructor at the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Florida Atlantic University. A retired Deputy Chief of Police from the Coral Springs Police Department with 26+ years of law enforcement experience, he brings extensive field expertise to academia.

Mr. Backer's professional focus spans policing operations, criminal investigations, and critical incident response. His firsthand experience as a SWAT sniper, crimes-against-persons detective, and first responder at the 2018 Marjorie Stoneman Douglas tragedy informs his teaching of Crime Analysis (a Quality Matters certified course) and Criminal Justice Systems. He has testified before the MSD Commission and regularly presents on law enforcement lessons learned.
