Dr. Philip Choi is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) and a Senior Staff Specialist at The Canberra Hospital. His expertise spans hematology, platelet immunology, and immune-mediated thrombocytopenias. He leads the National Platelet Research and Referral Centre (NPRC) Biobank and has contributed to national and international guidelines on immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), and vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT). His work has been published in top-tier journals such as Blood, Lancet, and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
Education: BA, BSc(Med), MBBS (UNSW); PhD (UNSW); FRCPA, FRACP.
Research focuses on improving diagnostics and treatments for platelet disorders, including AI-driven biomarker discovery and clinical trials for novel therapies like rilzabrutinib. He chairs the ACT Health HREC Clinical Research Subcommittee and serves on advisory boards for industry (e.g., Novartis, Amgen) and government agencies (e.g., National Blood Authority).
Awards include the 2014 RCPA Foundation Kanematsu/Novo Nordisk Award for work on non-pathogenic HIT antibodies. He reviews for journals like Blood and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and contributes to educational initiatives through lectures and online training for the ISTH.
Current roles include Treasurer of THANZ, membership in the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand, and leadership in undergraduate/graduate teaching at ANU Medical School and RACP training programs.
