Dr. Philip A. Chan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University. He holds dual appointments in Warren Alpert Medical School and the School of Public Health. As Medical Director of Rhode Island's publicly funded STD clinic and the state's dedicated PrEP Program, Dr. Chan leads efforts to combat HIV and STI transmission. He is Principal Investigator on multiple NIH grants focusing on HIV prevention, including implementation science for PrEP and community-based interventions. Dr. Chan also directs the local AIDS Education and Training Center and collaborates with the Rhode Island Department of Health on public health strategies targeting sexual and gender minorities.
His research integrates epidemiology, behavioral science, and clinical practice to address health disparities. Notable areas include PrEP uptake among marginalized populations, STI network analysis, and HIV testing innovations. Dr. Chan's work spans over 90 peer-reviewed publications and includes grants like R01MH114657 (PrEP clinical implementation) and R34DA042648 (PrEP in STD clinics). His projects emphasize scalable solutions for at-risk communities, such as home-based HIV testing and digital health tools.
Dr. Chan earned his MD and MS from the University of Vermont. He actively engages in education, mentoring students in HIV/AIDS research, and advocating for policies enhancing access to preventive care. His clinical and public health initiatives aim to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery for vulnerable populations, particularly within LGBTQ+ and incarcerated communities.
