Steven A. John, PhD, MPH, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Co-Director of the Prevention and Implementation Sciences Training (PAIST) Lab. He serves as Principal Investigator for two NIH-funded projects: \"OnPOINT\" (mHealth strategies for HIV self-testing and PrEP uptake among young sexual minoritized men) and \"3T-Prevent\" (multi-level implementation for HIV/STI treatment and prevention).
His educational background includes:
- Fellowship, Implementation Science, Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Biostatistics and Behavioral Science, Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training (CHEST), Hunter College, CUNY
- PhD, Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
- MPH, Community and Behavioral Health Promotion, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
- BS, Biology, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dr. John's research program develops behavioral interventions and implementation strategies for HIV/STI care engagement, with national expertise in biomedical intervention acceptability and PrEP uptake/persistence. His work addresses health disparities among sexual/gender minority populations, emphasizing rural and underserved communities through community-based telehealth, mHealth, and implementation science frameworks.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on telehealth solutions for rural HIV care, PrEP continuum engagement across global contexts (US, China, Uganda), and intersectional barriers related to race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. His work increasingly integrates implementation science with technology-driven approaches to overcome structural healthcare barriers.
His scientific recognition includes:
- HIV and Sexual Health Early Career Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine (2023)
As a mentor, Dr. John fosters diverse early-career researchers through the PAIST Lab while securing significant NIH grant funding. His work directly informs public health policy for HIV prevention and care engagement among marginalized populations, with emphasis on scalable implementation strategies.
The PAIST Lab provides training in implementation science for HIV prevention and care, supporting a multidisciplinary team focused on translating evidence into practice for sexual/gender minority communities.
