Stephanie Cohen

Stephanie Cohen, MD, is a Volunteer Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and holds a joint appointment in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She serves as Medical Director of San Francisco City Clinic, the municipal STD clinic, and provides HIV primary care at City Clinic and the VA Medical Center. Her work focuses on implementation science to translate HIV/STD prevention research into clinical practice. Notably, she leads the NIH-funded Demo Project (assessing PrEP delivery in STD clinics) and co-leads the STOP Study (evaluating HIV testing methods). Her research emphasizes PrEP, doxycycline PEP (Doxy-PEP), and STI prevention strategies. Dr. Cohen completed her Internal Medicine Residency at UCSF and has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed publications, covering topics such as HIV reservoir dynamics, STI epidemiology, and public health policy.

Key research areas include implementation science for HIV/STI prevention, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), bacterial STI post-exposure prophylaxis (Doxy-PEP), and antimicrobial resistance. Her studies address real-world challenges in scaling up evidence-based interventions, such as PrEP adherence and STI testing strategies. She also investigates the impact of innovations like geocoding in outbreak response and the ethical implications of new prevention tools.

Dr. Cohen’s research outputs span implementation studies, randomized trials (e.g., DoxyPEP), and observational epidemiology.
