Dr Phil Marter is a Senior Lecturer in the Archaeology of the Recent Past at the University of Winchester's School of Humanities. He holds a PhD from the University of Southampton and a postgraduate qualification in Professional Archaeology from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on WWII aviation archaeology, conflict archaeology, and battlefield studies, with projects spanning the UK, France, and Germany. Notable works include excavations of crashed aircraft remains and investigations into Magdalen Hill's WWI military camp.
He collaborates with institutions like hessenARCHÄEOLOGIE and Saxion University, and contributes to international training programs such as the Glauberg International Summer Academy. Dr Marter actively promotes archaeological standards in aviation archaeology and works with veterans' organizations. His media appearances include contributions to BBC's Time Team and the History Channel's WWII Treasure Hunters.
Awarded Higher Education Academy Fellowship (FHEA), he supervises research students in topics like military archaeology and aviation history. His excavations at St Mary Magdalen Hospital have revealed insights into medieval healthcare practices, combining bioarchaeology with historical analysis.
