Petros Spanou is a Research Fellow affiliated with St John's College and the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford. Their research focuses on 19th-century British intellectual and cultural history, particularly the intersections of religion, war, and peace. Spanou's DPhil thesis examines the Crimean War’s impact on Victorian debates over just war theory, mobilizing sources ranging from sermons to parliamentary debates.
Education & Research: Completed DPhil in History (2022) with funding from AHRC, the Sir John Keegan Scholarship, and the Royal Historical Society Fellowship. Research emphasizes religious and secular discourses on war/peace from 1851–1914, integrating visual/material culture with textual analysis.
Teaching: Current roles include teaching Victorian intellectual culture, modern British history, and political thought at Wycliffe Hall and Oxford's Faculty of History. Previously served as Junior Dean at Balliol College, OxNet tutor, and outreach tutor for multiple colleges. Taught undergraduate modules on 'Intellect and Culture in Victorian Britain' at the Ashmolean Museum.
