Peter Vandenabeele is a VIB Group Leader at Ghent University's Center for Inflammation Research since 1996. He holds a PhD from Ghent University (1990). His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cell death modalities (apoptosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis) and their roles in immunology, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. His lab investigates signaling pathways involving caspases, RIPKs, and MLKL, using cellular and mouse models to explore therapeutic targets. Subgroups under his leadership (Bertrand, Declercq, Riquet) specialize in stress-induced cell death, skin inflammation, and dynamic imaging of cell death pathways. Key areas include drug screening for cell death modulation and translational research in oncology and neurodegeneration. His work has been featured in media like Knack and EOS Wetenschap, and he contributes to VIB's research initiatives such as the Marie Curie fellowship program.
Education: PhD in Molecular Biology, Ghent University (1990). Research Interests: Cell death regulation, innate immunity, cancer therapy, signaling pathways. His lab's interdisciplinary approach spans biochemistry, genetics, and pharmacology, aiming to bridge fundamental discoveries with clinical applications in inflammation and cancer.
Notable achievements include Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher recognition (2024) and contributions to international collaborations. The lab actively participates in grant programs (FWO, VIB) and maintains strong ties with industry through translational efforts.
