Peter Ralph

Professor Peter Ralph is a globally recognized academic and research leader in marine biology and climate change mitigation, serving as Executive Director of the Climate Change Cluster (C3) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He holds a PhD (UTS, 1997) and BSc (NSW Institute of Technology, 1986). His roles include Director of C3, deputy-chair of the Sydney Institute of Marine Sciences, and founder of the NSW Deep Green Biotech Hub. He advises UNESCO’s Blue Carbon Working Group and the Czech Academy of Sciences.

His research focuses on algae-based biotechnology, seagrass resilience, and photosynthetic processes under extreme conditions. Key interests include scaling microalgae cultivation, bio-refinery approaches, and developing carbon-neutral products like bioplastics and biofuels. He pioneered AI-driven algae biorefineries and zero-waste bio-manufacturing systems.

Recent publications (2023–2025) emphasize applications in carbon capture, sustainable materials, and algal phenotyping. His work bridges academia with industry through partnerships in biotechnology, aquaculture, and environmental engineering.

Ralph has secured $15M+ in research funding, leading projects on algal biomass production, carbon sequestration, and industrial partnerships. Awards include UTS’s Research Excellence Awards (2012, 2018) and over 280 peer-reviewed publications.

He supervises PhD/Master’s students and teaches courses on ocean systems and climate change. His lab’s innovations span from photosynthetic efficiency optimization to macroalgae-based construction materials.
