Andrei Herdean

Dr. Andrei Herdean is a Senior Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Faculty of Science, within the Climate Change Cluster (C3). His research focuses on advancing microalgal biotechnology through laboratory automation, directed evolution, and phenotyping to address global challenges in food security, biofuel production, and carbon capture. He leads UTS's Algal Phenomics Facility, pioneering innovations such as the Phenoplate and biofeedback photobioreactors. Herdean has secured patents for microalgae strains and cultivation systems, and his work integrates molecular biology, biophysics, and Industry 4.0 technologies.

His academic contributions include over 40 peer-reviewed publications and leadership in research projects funded by entities like Investment NSW and AlGenie Pty Ltd. He actively mentors Honours, Masters, and PhD students in courses like Environmental Biotechnology and Advanced Research Projects. Herdean has been recognized with the 2023 Global Talent Award and serves on committees including the Sydney Airport Environment Strategy Panel and the Royal Society of NSW. His research emphasizes sustainable bioproduct development, coral resilience, and scalable carbon sequestration solutions.
