Professor Peter Mackridge was a distinguished academic in Modern Greek Studies, serving as Lecturer (1981) and Professor (1996–2003) at the University of Oxford. His work focused on Greek language, literature, and cultural history from the Byzantine era to the modern period, with a specialization in post-1750 developments. He authored seminal works like The Modern Greek Language and co-edited Greek: A Comprehensive Grammar.
His research explored language ideologies, nationalism, and versification, alongside translations of Greek literary works. Key contributions include studies on Cavafy, Solomos, and Seferis, and analyses of the Greek language question. He received honorary degrees from the University of Athens (2008) and an honorary professorship from the University of the Peloponnese (2017).
Publications span scholarly articles on topics like Phanariot literature, Byzantine influences, and linguistic diglossia. His translations of works by Vizyenos, Papadiamandis, and Vlavianos further enriched cross-cultural dialogue.
