Marc Lauxtermann is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation – Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. He holds a fellowship at Exeter College and is affiliated with the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages. Originally from Amsterdam, where he was born, educated, and worked for many years, he now teaches Modern Greek literature (up to 1821) and Modern Greek linguistics to undergraduates, while offering specialized lectures and seminars for MSt and MPhil students in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies.
His research encompasses a broad spectrum of Byzantine and Modern Greek studies, with particular emphasis on:
- Byzantine poetry and metrical analysis
- Translations of oriental tales in Byzantium
- Early grammars and dictionaries of vernacular Greek
- Development of the Greek language during the eighteenth century
- Byzantine inscriptions and textual traditions
Lauxtermann's extensive publication record demonstrates consistent focus on Byzantine literary production, linguistic evolution, and cultural exchange. His works frequently analyze poetic structures, manuscript traditions, and cross-cultural narratives across the Mediterranean. Recent publications show heightened interest in epigraphic evidence, vernacular texts, and the interplay between Byzantine and neighboring cultures, particularly through the lens of textual criticism and historical contextualization.
