Peter J. Buckley is a Visiting Professor in the Department of International Business at Leeds University Business School, University of Leeds. He is the Founder Director of the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds (CIBUL) and the Business Confucius Institute (BCIUL), and has held visiting positions at leading institutions worldwide, including Sorbonne, Groningen, and City University of Hong Kong.
His educational background includes a BA in Social Sciences (Economics) from the University of York, an MA in Development Economics from the University of East Anglia, and a PhD in Economics from the University of Lancaster. He has also received multiple honorary doctorates from Uppsala, Lappeenranta, Copenhagen, Carleton, and the Open University of Hong Kong.
Professor Buckley's research centers on international business, particularly the theory of the multinational enterprise, foreign direct investment, knowledge management, technology transfer, and emerging markets—especially China and India. His work bridges theoretical depth with empirical analysis and policy relevance.
His extensive publication record includes over 250 refereed articles and 28 authored books, such as The Future of the Multinational Enterprise and The Theory of the Multinational Enterprise. His most recent works explore the global factory, international strategy, and cooperative transnational activities. His research trends emphasize global value chains, internalization theory, and the evolving role of emerging market multinationals.

Professor Buckley has supervised numerous PhD students and mentored researchers through CIBUL. He has led major research initiatives, including the White Rose East Asia Centre funded with £4.5 million. His consultancy work spans UNCTAD, UNIDO, UK government, and multinational corporations. He has served as President of the Academy of International Business (2002–2004) and Chair of EIBA (2009–2012).
He leads the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds (CIBUL), one of the world’s leading research centers in international business, and co-founded the Institute for Research on Contemporary China. These now contribute to the White Rose East Asia Centre, promoting interdisciplinary research on East Asia.
