Peter Jennings Buckley is a Visiting Professor of International Business at Leeds University Business School, University of Leeds, with additional affiliation to the University of Manchester. He is Founder Director of the Centre for International Business University of Leeds (CIBUL), established in 1995, which has grown to become one of the world's leading research centers in International Business.
Professor Buckley received his BA in Social Sciences (Economics) from the University of York in 1970, an MA in Development Economics from the University of East Anglia, and a PhD in Economics from the University of Lancaster. He has also been awarded multiple honorary doctorates from institutions including Uppsala University (Sweden), Lappeenranta University of Technology (Finland), Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), Carleton University (Canada), and Open University of Hong Kong.
His research focuses on International Business, particularly on multinational corporations, foreign direct investment, and international business strategy. He is best known for developing the internalization theory of the multinational enterprise with Mark Casson in 1976. His work has had significant impact, with Google Scholar listing over 29,924 citations and an h-index of 69. His most influential publications include 'The Future of the Multinational Enterprise' (1976) and 'The Theory of the Multinational Enterprise' (1987), with his most recent work being 'The Multinational Enterprise and the Emergence of the Global Factory' (2014).
Professor Buckley's research shows a consistent theoretical foundation with evolving practical applications, increasingly focusing on China-related topics and emerging markets in recent years. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical studies on foreign direct investment and international business strategy, particularly examining the global factory concept and international production networks.

Professor Buckley has supervised numerous PhD students throughout his career and has been actively involved in significant research funding initiatives. As Director of CIBUL, he leads research on the theory of the multinational firm, knowledge management in multinational firms, international transfer of technology, and the impact of foreign direct investment, particularly in China. He has also been instrumental in establishing Leeds University's Centre for Chinese Business and Development and the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds (BCIUL).
Professor Buckley has extensive international experience, having taught in numerous countries worldwide and held visiting professorships at institutions across Europe, Asia, and North America. His research has practical applications through consultancy work for central government, local government, international bodies (including UNCTAD and UNIDO), and leading companies.
