Professor Peter Ghosh is a historian of ideas and Jean Duffield Fellow in Modern History at St Anne's College, University of Oxford. He holds a BA from Merton College, followed by research fellowships at Nuffield College and St. Anne’s College, where he became a Senior Research Fellow. His research focuses on the history of historiography, social/political theory (especially Max Weber), and 19th-century British constitutionalism. He teaches Modern British History, European History (1789-1990), and courses on historiography and political theory at undergraduate and graduate levels.
His major publications include Max Weber and the Protestant Ethic: Twin Histories (OUP, 2014), which won the Istvan Hont Prize, and edited volumes on Victorian Britain and Weberian thought. Current research explores Weber’s state theory and the broader history of historiography from the Renaissance to modernity. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, balancing specialization with broader intellectual engagement.
Teaching responsibilities include the Masters program in Modern Political/Social Theory and supervising students in British V-VII papers. His work bridges historical analysis with theoretical frameworks, reflecting his belief in the necessity yet insufficiency of specialization in academic rigor.
Awards: 2014 Istvan Hont Prize in Intellectual History (St Andrews).
Notable contributions include reinterpreting Weber’s Protestant Ethic through twin-historical lenses and analyzing constitutional politics in Victorian Britain. His research often intersects with intellectual history and methodological debates in the discipline.
