Peter Berg is a Professor at the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Michigan State University, within the College of Social Science. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on work-life flexibility, aging workforce dynamics, international labor relations, and high-performance work systems. He has served as Director of the School since 2019 and previously as Associate Director (2015–2019). Berg has held visiting professorships, including at the University of Sydney (2006 as a Fulbright Scholar). He is a Fellow of the Big Ten Academic Alliance and has led major research initiatives funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, examining workforce aging and policy impacts. His work has been published in leading journals like ILR Review and Human Relations.
Education: PhD (1993), MA (1988) from University of Notre Dame; B.A. (1983) from Illinois Wesleyan University; Fulbright Scholar at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (1984–1988).
Research interests emphasize organizational responses to aging workforces, comparative labor policies, and the intersection of work and family life. His recent projects include analyzing partial retirement policies in Germany and the impact of training on retaining older workers. He co-authored Manufacturing Advantage: Why High-Performance Work Systems Pay Off (2000), recognized as one of the decade’s top industrial relations books.
Berg serves on editorial boards of ILR Review, Work, Aging, and Retirement, and the British Journal of Industrial Relations. He has held leadership roles in professional associations, including President of the Industry Studies Association (2015–2017) and Executive Board member of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA). His awards include the 2000 Outstanding Young Scholar Award and a 2005–2006 Fulbright Senior Scholar Award.
Teaching includes PhD seminars on employment relations theory, international HR systems, and study-abroad courses in Germany and China. His grants total over $1.5 million, supporting research on workforce aging, work-life flexibility, and comparative labor systems. Key publications span topics from modular production in apparel industries to the economic case for corporate responsibility to workers.
