Ariel Avgar is the David M. Cohen ’73 Professor of Labor Relations at Cornell University’s ILR School, serving as Senior Associate Dean for Outreach and Sponsored Research and Director of the Center for Applied Research on Work (CAROW). He holds academic leadership roles including Editor-in-Chief of the Labor and Employment Relations Association's publications. His research focuses on employment relations in healthcare, workplace innovations (e.g., healthcare IT, work practices), and conflict management strategies in organizations. He has explored topics like labor-management partnerships, union impacts, and the effects of organizational structures on employee and patient outcomes. His work has been published in top journals such as Industrial and Labor Relations Review and Industrial Relations.
Education: Ph.D. in Industrial Relations from Cornell University (ILR School), B.A. in Sociology, LL.B in Law (Hebrew University). Prior roles include Associate/Assistant Professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and legal clerkship at the Israeli National Labor Court.
Awards include the 2008 Best Dissertation Award and 2013 John T. Dunlop Scholar Award (LERA), alongside a 2012 Best Paper Award for research on team conflict accuracy. His research highlights organizational conflict resolution systems, healthcare workforce challenges (e.g., home health aides’ mental health), and the evolving role of labor unions in improving job quality.
