Per Brevig is a distinguished Norwegian-born musician, conductor, and educator currently serving on the Brass faculty at Manhattan School of Music since 1988, where he also teaches in the Orchestral Performance Program. He maintains teaching affiliations with The Juilliard School, Mannes College the New School for Music, New York University, and the Aspen Music Festival. As a conductor, he leads the Strathmere Festival Orchestra and Grieg Festival Orchestra, and previously served nine years as Music Director of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Brevig received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from The Juilliard School. His educational journey began with studies in Denmark with Palmer Traulsen, followed by a full scholarship to Juilliard in 1959, where he later became one of the first students admitted to the newly created doctoral program and remains the only trombonist to have received a DMA from Juilliard.
Brevig's research and performance interests span trombone performance, orchestral conducting, Scandinavian music (particularly Edvard Grieg), medical problems faced by musicians, and contemporary music. He has been a staunch advocate for contemporary compositions, commissioning numerous new works throughout his career. As founder and president of the Edvard Grieg Society, Inc. since 1991, he has championed Norwegian music through recitals, chamber performances, radio broadcasts, and symposia at Columbia University.
His scientific contributions include service on the Advisory Boards of Medical Problems of Performing Artists and Musikphysiologie und Musik Medizin, where he has written articles and given lectures on musician health issues.

Brevig has mentored numerous students who have gone on to positions in major orchestras worldwide. His conducting career expanded significantly after leaving the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 1994, during which he conducted over 20 operas in five years. He has conducted many renowned soloists including Itzhak Perlman, Lang Lang, and Hilary Hahn. His work with the Edvard Grieg Society has produced over 80 events celebrating Norwegian music and culture.
As founder of the Edvard Grieg Society, Inc. in 1991, Brevig has built an organization that produces recitals, chamber performances, radio broadcasts, and symposia. The Society often culminates its seasons with performances at Lincoln Center featuring the Orchestra of St. Luke's under his direction. He also founded the Juilliard Brass Ensemble in the 1980s, which performed both at Juilliard and internationally.
