Penny Lewis is a Professor of Labor Studies at the City University of New York (CUNY), with research focuses on social class, social movements, and urban social change. She actively bridges academic and community organizing, having worked as a union organizer and served as Vice President for Senior Colleges at the Professional Staff Congress (CUNY’s faculty and staff union). Her interdisciplinary approach integrates sociological theory, political economy, and historical analysis.

Her research spans social class, labor history, urban sociology, and political movements, with notable work on the Vietnam antiwar movement, Occupy Wall Street, and neoliberal urbanism. Publications include analyses of labor-community coalitions, economic justice campaigns, and spatial strategies in social movements.
