Paulien de Morree is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, specifically within the Institute of Constitutional, Administrative Law and Legal Theory. As a SIM Fellow, she is also affiliated with the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights. Her academic journey began with studies in Interdisciplinary Social Science (M.Sc) and Law (LL.M, cum laude) at Utrecht University, followed by a PhD defended in October 2016 on the prohibition of abuse of rights in Article 17 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Her research focuses on European and Comparative Constitutional Law, the European Convention on Human Rights, Human Rights, Constitutional Law, and Freedom of Speech. She is particularly interested in the concept of resilient democracy and how legal frameworks can protect open societies against authoritarian challenges. As co-founder and president of Stichting Initiatives for Peace and Human Rights, she supports human rights education and legal aid in Africa's Great Lakes Region.
Her publication record shows a strong focus on contemporary challenges to democracy and human rights, with recent work examining party bans, national security strategies, and case analyses of European Court of Human Rights decisions. Her research demonstrates how constitutional principles can be applied to protect democratic values in the face of emerging threats while maintaining respect for fundamental rights.
