Caia Vlieks serves as Assistant Professor of Constitutional Law at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, specifically within the Institute of Constitutional, Administrative Law and Legal Theory. She is affiliated with the Montaigne Centre for Rule of Law and Administration of Justice, holds a fellowship at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM), and is a core team member of the Research Platform on Migration Law (MiLa).
Dr. Vlieks earned her PhD from Tilburg University in June 2022 with a dissertation on nationality and statelessness in Europe. She also holds Master's degrees in Legal Research and International and European Public Law, both earned cum laude from Tilburg University.
Her research focuses on citizenship, constitutional law, fundamental rights, and statelessness, with particular emphasis on legal frameworks surrounding nationality determination, statelessness prevention, and human rights protections. Her work bridges theoretical constitutional principles with practical migration challenges, examining how legal systems address the complex intersection of national identity, human rights obligations, and international legal commitments.
Analysis of her publications from 2022-2025 reveals consistent scholarly engagement with statelessness determination procedures, nationality law reforms, and the tension between security concerns and citizenship rights. Her work demonstrates a methodological approach combining comparative legal analysis with practical case law examination, contributing to both academic discourse and policy development in European migration law.
Throughout her career, Dr. Vlieks has maintained active connections with research institutions and policy organizations. Her previous roles include lecturer and researcher at Tilburg University, program lead at the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (2020-2023), and associate tutor at the University of London (2018-2021), demonstrating her commitment to both academic scholarship and practical policy implementation.
Dr. Vlieks participates in Utrecht University's research initiatives under the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) framework, particularly within the Contesting Governance and Futures of Democracy research themes, contributing her expertise on constitutional dimensions of migration and citizenship to interdisciplinary research teams.
