Prof. Barbara Oomen holds a part-time professorship in Sociology of Human Rights at Utrecht University's Utrecht School of Law. Her work focuses on the interplay between law and society, particularly human rights, migration, and cultural diversity. She led the NWO Vici project 'Cities of Refuge' and authored influential books like Global Urban Justice and Rights for Others. Previously, she served as Dean of University College Roosevelt (2012–2022) and as a Fernand Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute. Oomen is actively involved in transnational municipal networks, advocacy for human rights education, and policy boards such as the Human Rights Cities Network. Her research bridges legal pluralism, urban governance, and global citizenship, emphasizing localization of human rights. Media engagements include commentary on migration policy, rule of law resilience, and constitutional reform debates in the Netherlands.
