Professor Paul Wake is a Professor of Game Studies at the Department of English, Manchester Metropolitan University, and co-director of the Manchester Game Centre. He leads the Horizon Europe-funded STRATEGIES project, focusing on sustainable transitions in Europe’s game industries. His research bridges literary studies, game design, and environmental advocacy, emphasizing climate crisis responses through games.
Education: PG Cert Academic Practice (MMU, 2009), PhD (English, MMU, 2004), MA (Critical Theory, MMU, 1998), BA (Hons) English (Durham University, 1994).
Research Interests: Game Studies (board, card, and roleplaying games), material culture of gaming, games for climate education, fantasy games (e.g., Blood Bowl), and Anthony Burgess’s literary legacy. He designs environmentally focused games such as Carbon City Zero and collaborates with charities like Possible.
Key Projects: STRATEGIES (2024–2028), Games Imagining the Future (2021–2022), SMOG (2022), and The Irwell Edition of Anthony Burgess’s works.
Advising & Grants: Supervises over 20 PhD students across game studies, environmental humanities, and narrative theory. Leads multiple funded initiatives on sustainable gaming and climate communication.
Labs/Teams: Manchester Game Centre, Frank and Alex games duo, and collaborations with institutions like Utrecht University and Possible.
