Shaul BASSI is a Full Professor of English Literature and Environmental Humanities at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. He holds dual affiliations with the Department of Comparative Linguistic and Cultural Studies and the Centre for Environmental Humanities (NICHE). His research bridges postcolonial studies, Shakespearean analysis, and environmental humanities, with a focus on African, Indian, and Jewish cultural contexts.
Research Interests: Shaul Bassi explores intersections between literature and environmental crises, particularly in postcolonial contexts. He investigates how Shakespeare's works engage with contemporary ecological debates and colonial legacies. His work on Jewish studies examines cultural identity through gastronomy and spatial politics. Recent projects include studies on Venetian-African cultural exchanges and climate justice in the Global South.
Funding: He led a 2011 MIUR PRIN project on postcolonial representations of Italy, and a 2017 EU Creative Europe initiative on Shakespeare's cultural legacy (SHABEGH project). Current affiliations include directing NICHE's environmental humanities programs and co-founding the Incroci di civiltà literary festival.
Teaching: Bassi has taught at Wake Forest University, Harvard-Ca'Foscari Summer School, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. He specializes in courses combining literary analysis with ecological, postcolonial, and comparative frameworks.
