Dr Matthew Whittle is a Lecturer in Postcolonial Literature at the University of Kent, specializing in postcolonial and global literatures with a focus on climate emergencies, migration, and decolonization. He co-authored Global Literature and the Environment (Routledge, 2024) and authored Post-War British Literature and the 'End of Empire' (Palgrave, 2016).

His research integrates postcolonialism, Indigenous studies, ecocriticism, and animal studies to analyze literary responses to capitalist-imperialism and ecological breakdown. Recent projects include a British Academy-funded study on climate-induced migration in African literature and editing Anthony Burgess’s The Right to an Answer for Manchester University Press.
Matthew’s publications span climate justice (Multiculturalism and the Weaponisation of Failure, 2024), decolonial aesthetics (Decolonization and the Aesthetics of Disorder, 2023), and dystopian literature. His work has been featured in The Independent, The Conversation, and Newsweek.
He is affiliated with the Centre for the Global Study of Empire, Kent Animal Humanities Network, and serves as Associate Editor at the Journal of Postcolonial Writing. Matthew also contributes to human rights organizations like IncomindiosUK and the Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group, and was a co-founder of the Northern Postcolonial Network.
