Professor Andrew Thompson is a Professor of Global and Imperial History and Professional Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford. He also serves as co-chair of the Global and Imperial History Centre. His research focuses on humanitarianism, human rights, globalization, migration, and colonial history, particularly in South Africa and postcolonial contexts.
Research interests include the history of humanitarianism and development, the relationship between empire and globalization, and the legacies of British imperialism. Current projects involve analyzing the emergence of modern aid systems through decolonization and postcolonial migrations. He has contributed to major works like The Oxford Handbook of the Ends of Empire (2018) and is preparing a book on humanitarianism and the end of empire.
Professor Thompson teaches Imperial and Global History and supervises DPhil students in areas like human rights, decolonization, and migration. His work has informed policy via contributions to the Windrush Lessons Learned Review (2019) and collaborations on projects such as the Long Humanitarian Century initiative with Professor Mike Aaronson. He is affiliated with the Oxford Martin Programme on Changing Global Orders.
