Andrew Thompson is a Professor of Global and Imperial History at the University of Oxford and Co-Director of the Oxford Centre for Global History. He previously served as Chief Executive of the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council and International Champion for UK Research and Innovation. His work bridges academic research and public policy through roles like Vice-Chair of Trustees of Royal Museums Greenwich.
His research focuses on the dissolution of empires and the emergence of global systems. Key areas include the humanitarian and development networks formed post-colonialism, the cultural legacy of imperialism, and the socio-political dynamics of decolonization. Thompson’s interdisciplinary approach integrates economics, political history, and cultural studies.
Thompson’s scholarly output includes major works on the British Empire’s global impact, cultural heritage, and the evolution of colonial systems. He is currently finalizing a book titled Humanitarianism on Trial, examining how aid and human rights frameworks developed alongside imperial decline.
