Prof. Paul Moynagh is the Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science & Engineering and Head of the Department of Biology at Maynooth University, where he also directs the Human Health Research Institute. He holds a B.A. (Mod) and PhD from Trinity College Dublin, followed by postdoctoral work and a lectureship at University College Dublin (UCD). His research focuses on immunology, particularly innate immunity and inflammatory signaling pathways. Key achievements include pioneering work on Pellino proteins and their role in cytokine regulation, leading to awards like the NUI Centennial Prize (2009) and IASBS Medal (2014). He is an SFI Principal Investigator and has published extensively in journals such as Nature Communications and Journal of Immunology.
Research Interests:
- Mechanisms of innate immune signaling (TLR pathways, NF-κB activation)
- Role of ubiquitin ligases (Pellino family) in cytokine production
- Neuroinflammatory processes and cytokine interactions in the CNS
- Regulation of inflammatory responses in autoimmune and infectious diseases
Grant Activity: As SFI Principal Investigator, he leads projects on immune signaling and inflammation. His lab investigates Pellino proteins' roles in inflammasome regulation and cytokine priming.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Human Health Research Institute, collaborating on projects involving immunology, neuroinflammation, and translational medicine.
