Dr Paul (Mac) McDermott is a Lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. His research focuses on Australian electronic dance music history and experimental composition, blending artistic and commercial dimensions of dance music. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (2021) and has been recognized with two ARIA Awards for his music releases.
Education: Doctor of Musical Arts (2021), awarded for his work fusing EDM traditions with experimental practices.
Research interests include the cultural and historical dimensions of Australian EDM, trauma in creative processes, and interdisciplinary music theatre. His works, such as The Rise & Fall of St. George, have been performed at major venues like Melbourne’s Hamer Hall and the Sydney Festival.
Publications span book chapters on EDM history and music composition, alongside albums and collaborative projects. His recent Tekno Train: The Album (2024) reimagines Sydney’s train routes as an electronic music experience.
Scientific Awards: ARIA Awards for Best Dance Release (2021 and 1995). Collaborations include work with Daniel Johns (Silverchair), Stereogamous, and Itch-E & Scratch-E.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Sydney Conservatorium’s Contemporary Music Practice program, contributing to innovative music education and performance initiatives.
