Dr. Nicholas Ng is an Associate Lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (The University of Sydney) since 2016, specializing in erhu performance, composition, and ethnomusicology. His roles include teaching Chinese music ensembles, aural perception, and Australian musical worlds. Previously, he held positions as a Lecturer at The Australian National University (ANU) and a Research Fellow at Queensland Conservatorium and the Institute for Australian and Chinese Arts and Culture.
Education: PhD in Music (2008, ANU).
Research focuses on Chinese and Aboriginal music, early music, jazz, and transcultural performance practices. His work explores the intersection of traditional and contemporary music, particularly in religious and diasporic contexts. Notable projects include collaborations with artists like William Yang and Benjamin Law, and curating events such as ENCOUNTERS: China (2010) and BrisAsia Festival (2012-2013).
Awards include the De Viana Liturgical Music Prize and recognition for compositions like Bathing the Buddha. His artistic career has been featured on ABC TV's Compass and SBS Mandarin Radio.
Advising and Grants: Mentor to students in erhu and composition. Projects include Sunday Sounds at the Chinese Garden of Friendship (NSW Government) and co-direction of the Sydney Conservatorium's Chinese Music Ensemble.
