Carl Dewhurst is a Lecturer in Jazz Performance (guitar) and Rhythm Awareness at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. His career spans over 35 years across Sydney, New York, London, and Amsterdam. He leads the ensemble Showa 44 and has performed with renowned artists like Simon Barker, Lisa Parrott, and the Australian Art Orchestra. His research focuses on rhythmic adaptation, guitar pedagogy, and composition.

Research interests include rhythm studies, improvisation pedagogy, and extended guitar techniques. He has composed soundtracks for theater and films, including Emma Franz’s documentary Intangible Asset No. 82.
Recent projects involve reconfiguring drum etudes for guitar, exploring quintuplet and septuplet rhythms, and preparing an album with Cameron Undy and Lisa Parrott (2024).
