Professor Paul Martin holds the Chair in the Sociology of Science and Technology at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations. He previously directed the Institute for Science and Society (ISS) at the University of Nottingham and served as Head of Department (2014–2016). Martin's work bridges Science and Technology Studies (STS) with medical sociology, focusing on epigenetics, biosocial concepts, and the societal impact of biomedical innovations. He has secured over £2.6M in research grants, including a Leverhulme Trust grant on epigenetics and health disparities.
Education: BA Zoology (Cambridge), MSc Sociology (Southbank University), DPhil (part-time, Sussex University). Research interests include the sociological implications of genomics, personalized medicine, and responsible innovation. He co-founded the Institute for the Study of the Human (iHuman), exploring interdisciplinary approaches to humanity in the 21st century. Notable projects include analyzing gene editing ethics and the societal role of neuroscience.
Recent work examines how epigenetics links social inequality to biological outcomes, influencing policy. Martin collaborates across disciplines to address ethical challenges in emerging technologies. His publications span journals like Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and New Genetics and Society, emphasizing sociotechnical systems and health equity.
