Dr Julia Swallow is a Wellcome Trust-funded Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Sociological Studies, part of the School of Sociological Studies, Politics, and International Relations. Her work bridges medical sociology and Science and Technology Studies (STS), focusing on biomedicine’s evolving practices, particularly in Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and genomic technologies. She holds a PhD from the University of Leeds (2012–2015) and has held prestigious fellowships at the University of Edinburgh (2020–2024) and a current Career Development Award (2024–2030).
Research interests include immunotherapy’s material and metaphorical dimensions, genomic cancer medicine’s societal impacts, and the role of chronic inflammation in degenerative disease. She co-convenes the British Sociological Association’s Science and Technology Studies Study Group and contributes to interdisciplinary research networks like the University of Sheffield’s STeMiS and iHuman.
Her publications critically analyze diagnostic practices, patient experiences, and the ethical implications of biomedical innovation. Key themes include uncertainty in memory clinics, the reclassification of disease boundaries, and the interplay between metaphor and materiality in healthcare.
Recent work examines how immunotherapy reshapes cancer management and how chronic inflammation is repositioned as ‘medicine’s new frontier.’ She emphasizes the sociocultural dimensions of biomedical advancements, advocating for critical perspectives on emerging technologies.
Awards include the Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship (2020–2024) and Career Development Award (2024–2030). Her teaching spans medical sociology and STS within sociology departments and medical schools, emphasizing critical engagement with health systems and biomedical practices.
