Dr. Paul Fernyhough is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba's Max Rady College of Medicine and directs the Division of Neurodegenerative and Neurodevelopmental Disorders at St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre. His research focuses on mechanisms of nerve damage in diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, with emphasis on cholinergic signaling, GPCR pathways, and drug design. He co-founded WinSanTor Inc., a biotech firm advancing clinical trials for peripheral neuropathy.
Education: BSc (Biology, University of Essex, 1981) and PhD (Biochemistry, University of Sheffield, 1984). Postdoctoral training included Colorado State University, King’s College London, and a Wellcome Trust Fellowship at St. Bartholomew’s Medical College. Previously held a tenured position at the University of Manchester before moving to Canada in 1998.
Research affiliations include Diabetes Action Canada, Manitoba Neuroscience Network, and leadership roles in the Cell Biology of Neurodegeneration Lab. His work investigates axonal degeneration, mitochondrial function, and antimuscarinic drug therapies, aiming to address unmet needs in neurodegenerative diseases.
