Douglas Wright, PhD is a Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He also serves as Principal Investigator for the Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (K-INBRE) and directs research programs focused on peripheral nerve disorders.
- Education: PhD from the University of Kentucky, Postdoctoral Fellowship at Washington University in Neurology
Dr. Wright's research investigates mechanisms of peripheral nerve degeneration and pain pathogenesis using mouse genetic models and human translational studies. Key areas include diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, and nerve regeneration. His lab explores dietary/behavioral interventions and epidermal innervation dynamics in chronic pain conditions.
The lab's publications (2021) highlight work on painful diabetic neuropathy and stress responses in burn injury models. Research spans molecular pathways, axon degeneration, and cross-disciplinary approaches to metabolic-disease-related sensory dysfunction.
- Scientific Awards: NIH R01 renewal, American Diabetes Association Cure Award, William T. Kemper Fellowship
As a mentor, Dr. Wright has advised multiple graduate students and MD/PhD candidates, including recipients of the Argersinger Best Dissertation Award and Self Graduate Fellowships. His lab leads clinical studies like the MEH Study for biomarker discovery and the TOMADS T32 training program.
The Sensory Nerve Disorder Lab (SNDL) maintains a translational focus, bridging basic science and clinical applications while training future scientists for academic and industry careers.
