Dr. Lorrie Kirshenbaum is a Professor at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, and serves as Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre. He holds cross-appointments in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics and is Canada Research Chair Tier I in Molecular Cardiology.
- Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology, University of Manitoba (1992)
- Master of Science in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Manitoba (1988)
- Bachelor of Science with Honors in Microbiology, University of Manitoba (1986)
Research Interests focus on molecular pathways regulating cardiac growth and cell death, particularly sex-specific differences in heart failure. His work explores mitochondrial metabolism, autophagy, and gene therapy for cardiovascular diseases. Recent projects include developing drugs to prevent chemotherapy-induced heart damage and establishing Manitoba's first Women's Heart Health program.
Scientific Awards include:
- Order of Manitoba (2023)
- Canada Research Chair Tier I in Molecular Cardiology
- 2020 Canadian Cardiovascular Society Research Achievement Award
- 2024 Honorary Doctor of Science, University of Kragujevac, Serbia
Kirshenbaum mentors graduate students and leads international collaborations with Mayo Clinic and Cedars Sinai. His lab's groundbreaking discovery of the Bcl-2 family protein Bnip3's role in heart failure has informed global treatment approaches. He also investigates links between cardiac cell death mechanisms and cancer genetics.
