Professor Paul Emery is a leading clinical academic in rheumatology at the University of Leeds, School of Medicine, where he holds the Arthritis Research UK Professorship and has been a major force in establishing Leeds as a world-renowned center in musculoskeletal and autoimmune disease research. He is Director of the Leeds NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and former Head of the Department of Rheumatology (until 2018). His affiliations include the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine, with leadership in multiple research groups including Immunity and Inflammation, Autoimmune Connective Tissue Diseases, and Imaging.
His research focuses on the immunopathogenesis and immunotherapy of inflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, SLE, scleroderma, and Sjögren’s syndrome. He pioneered early intervention strategies in arthritis and the integration of MRI and ultrasound into clinical practice. His current work emphasizes disease prevention through identification of individuals in the pre-clinical phase of autoimmune diseases, with national programs underway. His research spans immunology, imaging, biomarkers, and therapeutic innovation.
His publications reflect a strong trend in early arthritis detection, imaging modalities, immunomodulation, and preventive rheumatology, with broad applications across autoimmune and connective tissue diseases.

Professor Emery has supervised numerous postgraduate students and leads a large, multidisciplinary research team. He has secured sustained funding through the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and other national and international grants. His leadership extends to major roles in professional societies, including President of EULAR (2009–2011) and inaugural President of ISEMIR. He has served on editorial boards of all major rheumatology journals and is an NIHR Senior Investigator since 2008.
He leads research within the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine, directing the Biomedical Research Centre and coordinating research across multiple thematic groups including Immunity and Inflammation, Musculoskeletal Disease Targets and Therapies, Dermato-Rheumatology, and Imaging in Inflammatory Musculoskeletal Disease.
