Dr. Richard Wakefield is an Honorary Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Medicine under the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He is based at Chapel Allerton Hospital and holds roles such as co-lead for Student Education in LIRMM, lead for the Undergraduate Ultrasound Programme, and Undergraduate Lead for the Chapel Allerton Hospitals CSU (Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust). His work focuses on musculoskeletal ultrasound, inflammatory arthritis, and medical education.
Education: BM (University of Southampton), MD (University of Leeds), PGCE (University of Huddersfield). Professional memberships include FRCP, British Society of Rheumatology (BSR), and International Skeletal Society.
Research Interests: Development of international standards for imaging in joint diseases, utilizing techniques like ultrasound, MRI, elastography, and OCT. Contributions include highlighting subclinical imaging inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and advancing ultrasound training programs. He co-edited an EULAR-endorsed ultrasound textbook and has published over 160 papers.
Leadership in Education: Pioneered the UK's first integrated 5-year undergraduate ultrasound curriculum at Leeds, launched in 2016. Directs national and international ultrasound training courses, establishing Leeds as a global center for ultrasound education. Organizes student and public engagement initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Leads ultrasound research for the Leeds Biomedical Research Centre (LBRC), collaborating with BSR, EULAR, and OMERACT. Affiliated with the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine and Diagnostics and Pathology research groups.
