Professor Philip Conaghan is the Director of the NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre and holds a Professorship in Musculoskeletal Medicine at the University of Leeds. He is an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and an NIHR Senior Investigator Emeritus. His roles include Chairing Trial Steering Committees, membership on the NICE Expert Advisor Panel, and international leadership positions such as Deputy Chair of OMERACT and member of EULAR committees.
He holds qualifications including MB BS, PhD, FRACP, and FRCP. His research focuses on arthritis pathogenesis, therapies, outcome measurement, and advanced imaging (e.g., MRI) for musculoskeletal disorders. Key projects include the ARIS study on arthritis and employment and the DMAPP programme for upper limb pain management. He has authored over 650 publications and co-edited the Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology.
Professor Conaghan is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (London), Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and major rheumatology societies. His research groups include the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine and the Complex Interventions Division.
