Iain McInnes

Iain McInnes is a Professor and academic leader at the University of Glasgow, serving as Vice Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. He holds dual professorships as the Muirhead Professor of Medicine and Versus Arthritis Professor of Rheumatology. His roles include Director of the Versus Arthritis Centre of Excellence for Inflammatory Arthritis and former President of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR). McInnes leads international initiatives, including the European Roadmap programme defining rheumatology research priorities.

His research focuses on immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID), particularly rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. Key areas include cytokine targeting, myeloid cell biology, and precision medicine. He has led over 200 clinical trials and has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles, achieving an h-index of 100. McInnes chairs critical advisory groups, such as the UK Government’s Independent Advisory Group for COVID-19 antiviral strategies, securing funding for Glasgow’s pandemic research.

McInnes’ honors include the CBE (2019), Carol-Nachman Prize (2019), and Sir James Black Medal (2015). He actively promotes translational research, bridging basic science to clinical practice. His laboratory investigates synovial inflammation, myeloid cell dysfunction, and therapeutic biomarkers. Collaborations span institutions like Oxford, Newcastle, and Birmingham, advancing therapies for autoimmune diseases.
