Dr. Patrick Shiu is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri's College of Arts and Science. His research focuses on meiotic silencing by unpaired DNA (MSUD) and sexual development in fungi, particularly using Neurospora as a model organism. He received his PhD in 2000 from the University of British Columbia. His work explores gene regulation via post-transcriptional silencing, including RNA interference mechanisms and the role of RNA-directed RNA polymerases. Recent studies highlight MSUD's role in genomic surveillance, reproductive isolation, and fungal speciation.
Research Interests include:
- Meiotic gene silencing mechanisms
- RNA interference pathways in fungi
- Sexual development regulation
- Genetic elements driving meiotic drive
Notable awards include the 2019 Richard F. and Sharon A. Keister Faculty Enhancement Award, 2010 Faculty of 1000 Membership, and the 2008 Beadle and Tatum Award. His publications span molecular dissections of MSUD components, RNA granule dynamics, and fungal genetic systems.
