Patrick McColgan is a Reader in Finance at the University of Strathclyde since 2017, previously holding roles as Senior Lecturer at Strathclyde and Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen. He currently serves as Director for Postgraduate Research (PGR) in the Department of Accounting and Finance, overseeing PhD, DBA, and MPhil programs. His management roles include Department Ethics Convenor and Vice Convenor of the University Ethics Committee. He chairs the Scottish Area Group of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) and led Strathclyde’s hosting of the 2019 Financial Management Association European Conference.
McColgan holds a PhD (2004) and Bachelor’s degree (2000) in Finance from the University of Strathclyde. His research focuses on corporate restructuring (e.g., layoffs, asset divestitures), debt issuance, and corporate governance. He has supervised 9 PhD completions and currently advises 3 candidates. His work appears in top journals like Journal of Corporate Finance and Journal of Banking and Finance.
Teaching specialties include Corporate Finance modules for undergraduates and MSc students, with international delivery in Bahrain, Oman, Hong Kong, and the UAE. Teaching accolades include multiple nominations for excellence at Strathclyde. He serves as external examiner for UK institutions like Edinburgh and Lancaster universities.
His research explores topics such as SRI awareness among Chinese investors, bond market dynamics, and SOX Act impacts on managerial incentives. He currently leads the SBS Excellence Awards project (2024–2028). Professional activities include conference organization and contributions to policy discussions on global financial markets.
