Dr. Patrick Elf serves as Associate Professor in Sustainable Business at Middlesex University's Centre for Enterprise, Environment and Development Research (CEEDR) within the Faculty of Business and Law, while concurrently holding a Co-Investigator position at the ESRC-funded Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) at the University of Surrey. His academic profile bridges sustainable business theory with practical implementation through major industry and governmental partnerships.
Elf earned his PhD from the University of Surrey, conducting collaborative research with IKEA UK & Ireland at the Centre for Environment & Sustainability on multinational corporations' role in promoting sustainable lifestyles. His educational trajectory includes prior professional experience at the London Sustainable Development Commission/Greater London Authority as a Project Assistant (October 2014-May 2015), providing foundational exposure to urban sustainability governance.
Research interests center on sustainable business model innovation, behavior change mechanisms for sustainable lifestyles, and transformative consumption frameworks, with specialized focus on circular economy implementation, post-growth economics, and degrowth theory. Current research initiatives examine sustainable small/medium fashion enterprises advancing circular systems, sustainable food networks, and post-growth business models through interdisciplinary longitudinal studies. His work uniquely integrates indigenous knowledge systems with contemporary sustainability challenges, as evidenced by recent publications on Amazonian praxis and psychedelic applications for ecological connectedness.
Publication trends across 2023-2025 reveal concentrated expertise in sustainable fashion entrepreneurship (particularly micro-enterprises), sustainable finance ecosystems in emerging markets, and methodological innovations in business-sustainability research. His scholarly output demonstrates strong interdisciplinary engagement spanning business strategy, environmental psychology, cultural anthropology, and policy studies, with increasing emphasis on Global South perspectives and non-Western knowledge systems.
Award recognition includes selection as a UNLEASH Lab 2017 Global Talent among 100 international participants developing SDG solutions. His research leadership extends to major funded initiatives including IKEA UK collaborations on co-creational behavior change, National Lottery Community Fund projects on social cohesion mechanisms, and London Borough partnerships implementing Green Economy Action Plans.
Teaching responsibilities encompass module leadership for PRS4580: Business and Enterprise for Sustainable Prosperity (MSc Sustainable & Environmental Management), alongside instruction in Cross-Cultural Management and Ethics, Globalized Context Management, Environmental Law and Governance, and Fashion Culture and Industry. His academic lab structure operates through CEEDR at Middlesex University and CUSP at Surrey, facilitating cross-institutional collaboration with industry partners including IKEA, National Lottery Community Fund, and multiple London Boroughs on community wellbeing and sustainable development implementation.
