Patrick Denice is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Western Ontario (Canada), where he conducts research on social inequality, education, and labor markets. He also serves as an external affiliate at the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology at the University of Washington.
Dr. Denice earned his PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.
His research program focuses on understanding inequality through multiple lenses:
- Education: non-traditional pathways to and through postsecondary education, school choice policies, and racial/ethnic segregation in educational systems
- Labor Markets: workplace policies and institutions affecting wages, pay secrecy, and union impacts
- Demography: life course transitions, educational assortative mating, and neighborhood effects on social outcomes
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on how structural inequalities manifest during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, with particular attention to racial disparities in health outcomes and educational opportunities. His work often employs sophisticated quantitative methods to analyze large-scale datasets, contributing to policy discussions around educational equity and workplace fairness.
Dr. Denice has received notable recognition for his scholarly contributions:
- Honorable mention, Best Post-PhD Paper Award from the Sociology of Education Association
- Editor's Choice Award for his article in Demographic Research
As an educator, Dr. Denice has taught a range of sociology courses at Western University since 2018, including Statistics for Sociology, The Social Context of Racial Inequality, and Mapping Inequality. His methodological expertise in quantitative analysis informs both his research and teaching approach.
