Patricia W. Linville is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and also holds an appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience within Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. from Duke University in 1979. Her research focuses on social cognition, intergroup relations, judgment and decision-making processes, and the psychological mechanisms underlying stress and health outcomes.
Her work explores topics such as perceived covariation in social judgment, the outgroup homogeneity effect, self-complexity as a stress buffer, and expertise effects on decision-making. Notable contributions include studies on AIDS risk perceptions, the dynamics of intergroup perception, and interventions to improve academic performance through attributional training.
Linville has been a recipient of a National Science Foundation grant (1997–2000) for research on decision-making under conflicting goals. She teaches courses in negotiation and social judgment at the Fuqua School of Business. Her dual appointments reflect interdisciplinary expertise bridging business, psychology, and neuroscience.
Her publications span over four decades, addressing themes like stereotyping, covariation bias, and the cognitive foundations of social behavior. Ongoing research likely continues to integrate behavioral decision theory with organizational and health psychology contexts.
