Patricia Silva is a full-time Senior Lecturer at Santa Reparata International School of Art (SRISA) in Florence, Italy, where she teaches in the Studio Art Department. With over 20 years of teaching experience across multiple institutions, she specializes in Book Arts, Printmaking, and the History of the Book.
Born in Brazil and raised in the United States, Silva received her BFA in Art History/Studio Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, followed by an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Prior to her academic career, she worked for 10 years as a graphic designer and art director in the publication industry, and completed studies in Syracuse University's graduate program in Italian Renaissance Art History.
Her research and creative interests include:
- Traditional and contemporary book arts techniques
- Artist's book creation and limited edition publications
- Historical and modern printmaking methods
- Book conservation practices
- History of the book as an art form
- Italian Renaissance influences on book arts
Silva currently lives and works in Florence where she runs a private studio specializing in custom bookworks. Her work is held in private and institutional collections across the United States, Italy, and Brazil. She has completed internships in book conservation at the American Philosophical Society and the Library Company in Philadelphia under Hedi Kyle.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes collaboration: "The defining characteristic of my teaching style is collaboration. I believe that a productive learning environment is nurtured by a give and take approach between student and teacher." In addition to her regular courses, Silva organizes and leads private bespoke workshops for individuals and small groups.
