Patricia Arend is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the School of Arts and Sciences, Fitchburg State University. She teaches courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Gender and Society, and Sociology of Organizations.
- Education: PhD in Sociology from Boston College, MA in Sociology and Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Northeastern University, and BA from the University of Dayton.
Her research explores gender inequality in consumer society, the popularity of white weddings in an era of growing gender equality, and consumption’s role in environmental sustainability. For instance, her work Dream Weddings: Fantasy, Femininity and Consumer Desire analyzes the paradox of white wedding cultural dominance using qualitative methods.
Patricia’s publications span interdisciplinary topics, including critical sociology, consumer culture, and racial/gender identity. She has contributed to journals like Journal of Consumer Culture and edited volumes such as Culture, Power, and History (Brill Academic Publishers, 2005). Her research often bridges gender studies, advertising, and sociological theory.
She is affiliated with major academic organizations: American Sociological Association (ASA), Eastern Sociological Society (ESS), National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA), Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP), and Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS).
