Panopoulos Panagiotis

Panagiotis Panopoulos is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology and History at the University of the Aegean, where he has taught since 2003. His academic career includes visiting positions at Princeton University, UC Berkeley, and institutions in Germany. He holds a PhD from the University of the Aegean (1998), following studies in pedagogy at the University of Athens. His research focuses on sound anthropology, music anthropology, and performance studies, with notable work on Greek cultural practices, Deaf communities, and collaborations with visual artists. Key projects include the "Voice-o-graph" exhibition at documenta 14 (2017) and studies on sound symbolism in rural Greece.

Research Interests: Panopoulos explores the intersection of sound, culture, and identity through ethnographic methods. His work examines how soundscapes shape cultural narratives, including studies of Greek folk traditions, Deaf art, and the role of music in constructing locality. Recent projects engage with sensory anthropology, acoustic ecology, and interdisciplinary art collaborations.

Teaching & Courses: He teaches courses such as "Anthropology of Sound" and "Sound Anthropology and Sound Art", emphasizing methodological innovation and interdisciplinary approaches. He also contributes to postgraduate programs in Social and Historical Anthropology.

Collaborations: Active in international academic networks, Panopoulos has collaborated with institutions worldwide and participated in major exhibitions like the Greek Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2019).
