Panagiotis Panopoulos

Panagiotis Panopoulos is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology and History, University of the Aegean, where he has taught since 2003. His work intersects anthropology with sound studies, focusing on music, performance, and sensory ethnography. He has held visiting positions at Princeton University (2002–03, 2012), University of California, Berkeley (2009), Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (2012), and University of Cologne (2018).

His research explores the anthropology of music, sound, and performance, with key contributions to cultural soundscapes, deaf studies, and art-based ethnography. Current projects include studies of Greece’s Deaf community and collaborations with visual artists, such as the Voice-o-graph project presented at documenta 14 (2017). His work engages with acoustic ecology, sensory anthropology, and multimodal methodologies.

Panopoulos’ publications reflect trends in sound anthropology, emphasizing cross-cultural analyses of auditory symbolism (e.g., Greek island villages), the role of music in place construction, and intersections of sound with gender, migration, and identity. His collaborations with artists like Panos Charalambous demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches to ethnographic research.

He is a member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists and the Greek Society for Acoustic Ecology. Courses taught include Anthropology of Music, Sound Anthropology and Sound Art, and Music and Globalization, reflecting his research foci.
