Efthymios Papataxiarchis is Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of the Aegean's Department of Social Anthropology and History, where he co-founded Greece's first anthropology department and served as its president/deputy president. He holds visiting professorships at the Universities of Athens, Crete, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, and Boğaziçi Üniversitesi. As director of the Ethnography Laboratory and International Graduate School 'Cultures, Migrations, Borders', he oversees research infrastructure and advanced training programs.
His research spans:
- Ethnography of Greece and the Mediterranean
- Political anthropology and border studies
- Migration/refugee crisis impacts
- Historical anthropology of Western Anatolia
- Gender and sociality
- Cultural management of difference
He has led major EU-funded projects (Horizon, ELIDEK) supporting doctoral/postdoctoral research. As a founding member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists, he promotes transnational scholarly exchange. Editorial responsibilities include directing Alexandria Publications' anthropology series and serving on boards of Contemporary Issues and Hellenic academic journals.
